Every profession has
its iconoclasts; those who refuse to accept the norm but strive
for something more ... something that lies beyond. Tradition
is considered common and is accepted. Difference is something
to be questioned. Conforming to standards in any profession
can be a comfortable position. Taking those accepted standards
to a higher level can be a very arduous journey.
Terri Arnold has taken
dog training to a higher plateau. She has looked tradition
in the eye and has refused to accept what for years was considered
normal. Instead she has sought a higher level of achievement;
a greater degree of perfection; a better understanding between dog
and handler. She has taken dog training to unaccustomed places
and as a result the sport will never be the same. The rules
have changed, the concept is now different, the picture is forever
changed. The role of innovator is a difficult one to wear.
Terri Arnold wears the role well. The dog training world has
been changed because of her. The term "competitive dog"
was unknown before Terri. She has since restructured the the
playing field and has give us a clear picture of the modern competitive
dog handler team. And it is a sight to behold.
Few have the power to
motivate; to influence; to affect lasting change. Terri Arnold
entered the sport as a novice, but her influence will be felt for
generations. That's the way it must be for innovators.
